HOPE FOR AGOLDENSUMMER - Athens, GA
“Hope for Agoldensummer is a profoundly understated, content focused group from Athens, Georgia. Their music is a bluegrass-tinged wellspring of harmony and intimate lyricism. Resonator Magazine, in an article profiling the band, wrote on the grounding humanity of their sound: “The thing with the soulful vocals, the soft finger-plucked instrumentation—it’s all so damn tangible, so damn human, so present. So much of the redemptive quality of all of Hope for Agoldensummer’s music comes from that ever-present (even in darkness) humanity. Lyrically, too, this focus on the human finds continuing expression throughout their work, most explicitly in “Luke’s Song”, in which the band intones, gospel-like, “Love you my brother / Yes I do! / I love you my brother / Yes I do! / I will not forsake you / No I won’t / Your sister will not fail you / No she won’t!” Hope for Agoldensummer’s songwriting is united by themes of community, family, love and the shared struggle for justice—themes that hover in poetic allusion or hum beneath the currents of melody, ever present yet rarely gaudy or forced. They are a band of peace, brought to Grinnell as a part of the Peace Studies Conference, though the connections, however foundational, may take a few listens to make themselves apparent.” - Scarlet & Black

TODAY THE MOON, TOMORROW THE SUN - Atlanta, GA
Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun is about the collaborative. It’s about the connections between sound and people. It’s about the heart and the head. It’s for mistakes and triumphs, and against arrogance and underconfidence. A band of four. 2 boys. 2 girls. Noisy. Dancy. Loud. Sincere. Sweaty. Loveable. Hardworking. A real good time. Touring full-time since August ‘09. Their dwellings are in Atlanta, GA, but they call the East Coast home.
Folks say Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun occupy a strange land…a territory full of noisy chaos that dances around many perfectly manicured landscapes.  ”It’s pop music as art at it’s very finest”, Davy Minor (ohmpark).  ”Seamless drifting between genres- synthpop as well as ambient and indie rock without ever losing its effectiveness or focus. The drifting feels natural”, Matthew Godbey (Charleston Scene).  Other folks have made up odd sub-genres for them, “Dreamy Disco Punk” “Bullet-proof Dance Jams” & “Indie-Electro-Fuzz-Rock”.  All of these rare combinations add up to a sound you can’t quite put your finger on, but feel like you’ve known for years.

SHOVELS AND ROPE - Charleston, SC
Necessity is the mother of invention. Less is more. Make it work with what you’ve got. 2 Guitars, a junkyard drum kit harvested from an actual garbage heap and adorned with tambourines, flowers and kitchen rags. A handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.. songs. Shovels & Rope prefer to keep it simple. They have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and combine them into 1 cohesive, folk rock, sloppy tonk, harmonized, loose but tight, streamlined audience killing machine. Michael Trent (Texas/Colorado) has just released his second solo album entitled “The Winner”, and Cary Ann Hearst (Mississippi/Tennessee) is about to release her second record “Lions & Lambs”. Together hey have one duo release entitled “Shovels & Rope” which came out in 2008 and are currently working on the follow up “Shovels & Rope V.2” in their house, van, and backyard. At the shows, expect to hear a little something from any or all of these releases while the duo switch instruments and share lead vocal duties. Also prepare to rethink your definition of a live rock band.

STEPHANIESID - Asheville, NC
Stephaniesid, born in 2004, lives in Asheville, NC and makes pop music for “the darkness in you that’s trying to find the light.” The band possesses all the proper tools needed to create well-crafted songs and beautiful recordings. The music explores both the melancholy and triumph of human life and love, the players being equally faithful stewards of large, intoxicating swells and infectious, danceable melodies. Recordings affix weepy synthesizers, vibraphone lines, guitars, thick bass notes, quirky keyboard sounds, horns, and coquettish, curly, tenacious female vocals. The live show is unabashed energy funneled through Iowa-birthed and Texas-raised former gymnast Stephanie Morgan (vox, guitar, synth), southerner Chuck Lichtenberger (keys/vox/bass pedals), and Maine-born Tim Haney (drums), and a collective cast of other players.

ANDY D - Bloomington, IN
Andy D fancies himself the anachronistic love child of Punky Brewster and Lee Van Cleef – the perfect amalgam of a fictional rogue and a real-life badass. He plays music this like he lives life and it sounds like Andrew WK meets Grand Master Melle Mel or Like Prince if he couldn’t sing that well and if he weren’t a hyper-talented multi-instrumentalist. This is what his music is all about: part epicurean hip-hop-dance songs and part sincere dance rock songs, being eclectic and catchy is the only goal. “God Loves Drunk Chicks” is a infectious dance ditty lamenting date rape culture and “Just Push Play” is a witty indictment of “the next big thing” trend in the music industry and pop culture in general (both tracks are from the debut album Choose Your Perversion). This is rap but not hip-hop. It rocks but it’s not rap-rock. These songs are meaningful party songs but maximized! Andy D bends the genres but his influences are pretty apparent. And people take notice where ever he goes. From rapping about having sex with Werewolves to singing about knife fights in a roller rink, no subject is taboo in an Andy D song; and he gets raunchy with it. Half of the fun of Andy D is hearing what he will say next… the other half is dancing. Welcome to your new addiction!

MECHANICAL RIVER - Charleston, SC
Joel T. Hamilton is a mouthful. It’s 5 syllables and doesn’t well roll off the tongue. As a musician he has trouble sticking to one instrument, as a songwriter one genre, as a lyricist one voice resulting in vague ineffectivity. This quality very visibly imposes itself upon his life as well. As a person he writes his own bio in third person and feels silly. He has a failed garden in his backyard and got sick off cheap tequila last night and wants to die today. He knows there’s something to be said about highlighting ones better qualities but often has trouble finding them. He’s a below average arm wrestler and knows he needs contacts but refuses. Perhaps you’d be better off making your own music than listening to his pile.

THE WINTER SOUNDS - Nashville, TN
After relentless U.S. touring in 2008, the Winter Sounds followed Porcelain Empire with the thematic album Church of the Haunted South; released on Nashville label Theory 8 Records in 2009. Reflecting the contentious and pervasive shadow cast by the culture and history of the South, Church is a mature departure from the raw-aesthetic of their first record. Insomnia Radio proclaimed Church “an intricate masterpiece, piecing together individually beautiful and unique tracks to create a warming, powerful album full of contrast and intrigue.

Allison Weiss is an energetic 23-year-old with an electric guitar, a lot of feelings, and an avid online following. With her quirky charm and sharp pop sensibilities, Weiss makes losing a little more fun. “I’m all about catchy, upbeat, feel-good music, but the one thing I seem to aways write about is heartbreak,” she recently told Billboard.com, “I say [my songs] sound like your saddest memories sung to the tune of your happiest.” Now performing with a full band, her live shows are louder and more fun than ever, showcasing her unique brand of punk/folk-infused powerpop and her knack for keeping the audience wanting more.
